PRK Laser Eye Surgery

This is the original form of laser surgery and has been available since the late Eighties.

The outermost layer of the cornea is manually scraped away and an excimer laser reshapes tissues located on the underlying surface. Afterwards the epithelium layer must grow back.

PRK does not involve a knife or cutting laser as used in LASIK, but there may be more pain and slower visual recovery. It is an option for those with thin corneas where the creation of a cornea flap by cutting is undesirable.
